One city, two states, and what that means for a quote

State Line Avenue runs down the middle of Texarkana. West of it you are in Texas, and east of it you are in Arkansas. Each side has its own city government and its own ZIP codes. We ship from both.

What matters for car shipping is the ZIP code. Arkansas-side addresses use 71854. Texas-side addresses mostly use 75501 and 75503. The price difference between them is negligible, since the same interstate exits serve both, but the ZIP tells the driver which side of the line to go to. Check the state on your confirmation as well. “Texarkana, TX” typed for an Arkansas address is an easy mistake to make.

If you bought a vehicle on the other side of the line, or you are moving across it, registration and tax rules differ by state. Your county office can explain those. The shipping works the same either way.

I-30, I-49, and the Four States crossroads

I-30 crosses the north side of town, roughly 145 miles from Little Rock and 180 from Dallas. Carriers on that run pass Texarkana daily. I-49 goes south to Shreveport and I-20, about an hour away, and US 59 leads southwest toward Houston. Louisiana and Oklahoma are each within a 45-minute drive.

The result is strong carrier availability east, west, and south. North is the exception. US 71 toward De Queen and Fort Smith is a slower road through the Ouachita Mountains, and trucks bound that way often go around through Little Rock.

Where trucks load on each side

• State Line Avenue. North of downtown it is a wide commercial road all the way to I-30, with lots on both the Texas and the Arkansas curb.
• Downtown. The old grid on both sides has one-way streets and rail lines running through it. Carriers avoid it.
• The Texas side. Richmond Road and the mall area beside I-30 are the easy meeting points. Pleasant Grove subdivisions farther north have cul-de-sacs, and the truck waits on the main road.
• The Arkansas side. Arkansas Boulevard and East Street have room for a truck, and so do the areas out toward the airport and the loop.
• Wake Village and Nash. Quiet residential towns on the Texas side where a nearby store lot usually does the job.

Red River Army Depot

Red River Army Depot, about 18 miles west near Hooks, is the largest employer in the area. Most of its workforce is civilian, joined by contractors and a smaller number of soldiers, and people transfer in and out all year.

The depot’s gates are not open to commercial car haulers. Deliveries for depot staff go to a home address or to a lot in Hooks or New Boston. If your move is reimbursed, hold on to the quote and the final receipt, since the paperwork office will want both.

Cars bought in Dallas and at auction

Dallas–Fort Worth is one of the biggest used-car markets in the country, and Texarkana buyers shop there all the time. For a car that runs and has plates, the three-hour drive home is hard to beat. Shipping earns its place in other cases.

• An auction purchase usually has no plates and cannot legally be driven home.
• A vehicle that does not run needs a winch and a trailer whatever the distance.
• A small dealer bringing back several cars at once can put them all on one truck.

For auction vehicles, book as soon as you have paid. Storage fees start quickly, and the carrier needs your buyer number, the lot number, and the release paperwork to get through the gate.

Students and travel nurses

Texarkana is the medical center for a wide four-state area, and its hospitals rely on travel nurses and visiting specialists. The Texas A&M campus at Bringle Lake and the community colleges on both sides add students from Dallas, Houston, and Little Rock.

For a nursing contract, have the car delivered the day after you arrive and send it on to your next assignment when the dates are confirmed. For students from the big Texas cities, the trip is short enough to drive. Shipping is mostly for those coming from farther away.
