Shipping a car to a resort town with no interstate

Hot Springs is one of the most visited places in Arkansas, and it is not on an interstate. Carriers reach it from I-30, either on US 70 from the Benton side, about 30 miles, or on US 270 from Malvern, about 20. A truck comes here on purpose, not in passing.

In practice that means three things. Pickup takes a few days longer to arrange than it would in Little Rock. The price includes the side trip. And flexible dates help more here than in a city on the freeway. The good news is that both roads in are four-lane and easy for trucks, and steady demand from retirees and second-home owners keeps carriers coming.

Downtown, the mountains, and where a truck can go

The historic center is squeezed into a narrow valley. Central Avenue runs past Bathhouse Row with the national park’s mountains rising on both sides, the side streets climb steeply, and visitors fill the sidewalks most of the year. Car haulers do not load downtown.

  • South Central Avenue. Toward the racetrack and the lake the avenue widens and is lined with shopping centers. This is the most common place to meet a truck.
  • Airport Road and Albert Pike Road. The west side has wide commercial roads and plenty of room.
  • The MLK Expressway. Carriers use the bypass to get around town, and the lots near its Higdon Ferry Road exit are handy for a handoff.
  • Hillside streets. Neighborhoods on the slopes have switchbacks and short, steep driveways. Plan on bringing the car down to level ground.

Lake Hamilton, Lake Catherine, and lake-home access

Much of Hot Springs lives on the water. Around Lake Hamilton the shoreline lanes are narrow, many run out onto dead-end peninsulas, and driveways drop sharply to dock level. A carrier stays up on Central Avenue or Carpenter Dam Road, and the car comes to it.

Lakeside condos add gated lots and low parking decks. If the home is a getaway and you are not in town, a caretaker or neighbor with the key can meet the driver. A car that has sat in a lake-house garage all winter should be started and checked a few days before pickup, not that morning. For addresses out toward Lake Ouachita, the handoff normally happens back in town.

Retirees and Hot Springs Village

Hot Springs has drawn retirees for generations, many of them from the Midwest and Texas. The shipments that come with that are familiar: a car that follows a couple moving here for good, a vehicle sent on to grown children, and regular trips for people who keep a place in two states.

If you are relocating permanently, the movers take the furniture and the car travels separately. Set its first available delivery date for after you arrive. For Hot Springs Village, north of town, the west gate on Highway 7 is the usual meeting point, and the carrier will need a gate pass arranged in advance if it is going inside.

Race season and other busy times

Oaklawn’s live racing runs from winter into spring. On the biggest days, above all Arkansas Derby day, Central Avenue south of downtown barely moves. Spring break and summer weekends fill the town as well, and the St. Patrick’s Day parade closes part of downtown.

Weekday mornings are the easy choice. If you live near the track, skip Saturdays during the meet altogether. And if you come to Hot Springs for the racing season every year, book the car’s trip in and out when you arrange your housing, because your dates are the same ones everyone else wants.

Downsizing and family vehicles

In a retirement town, some shipments are about a car changing hands inside a family. A parent stops driving and the car goes to a grandchild in another state. An estate is settled and a vehicle needs to reach an heir a thousand miles away.

These are simple to arrange with a little preparation. The person meeting the driver needs the key and the authority to release the car, but not the title. A vehicle that has not been driven in months should have its battery and tires checked a few days ahead. If it will not start, say so when you book and the carrier will bring a winch.

Hot Springs shipping routes

How far it is, and how long the truck usually takes after loading. Lead time for pickup comes on top.

Approximate distance and typical transit time from Hot Springs

Hot Springs car shipping questions

Why does pickup take longer in Hot Springs than in Little Rock?

Because no interstate passes through. A carrier has to leave I-30 and drive 20 to 30 miles each way, so it waits until the trip fits its route. A flexible pickup window shortens the wait.

Would meeting the truck on I-30 save money?

It can. Enter a Malvern ZIP code (72104) or a Benton one (72015) in the quote form and compare the result with your Hot Springs price. Then weigh the difference against the drive and the ride home.

Can the carrier come to my condo on Lake Hamilton?

To the nearest main road, yes. Lake lanes and condo parking decks are too tight for a multi-car truck, so the driver will name a lot close by.

Can I ship a car to a vacation rental for a long stay?

Yes, and for a stay of a month or more it can cost less than renting. Schedule delivery for after you check in, because you need to be there to receive the car. Rental hosts generally will not do it for you.

I am retiring to Hot Springs. When should the car arrive?

A day or two after you do. Give us the first date you will be in town as the earliest delivery date, and the carrier will plan pickup at the other end to match.
