What the military covers and what it does not
For most moves inside the continental United States, service members are expected to drive their own vehicles and are paid mileage. Government-funded vehicle shipping is mainly for overseas assignments, and it normally covers one vehicle. Rules change and exceptions exist, so confirm with your transportation office what applies to your orders.
Private shipping fills the gap. You arrange it and pay for it, and you keep the receipt in case part of it can be reimbursed.
When service members ship a car
- A household has more vehicles than drivers for the trip.
- One spouse travels ahead and the other follows with children.
- A vehicle is being left with family during an overseas tour.
- A deployment or long school means the car should be somewhere else.
- A motorcycle or older car is not suited to a 1,500-mile drive.
Base access
A car hauler is a commercial truck, and its driver does not usually have base access. Most handoffs for people living on an installation happen outside the gate, at a lot the driver can pull into. If you need the truck to come on base, a visitor pass has to be set up in advance, and some carriers will decline. Tell us which installation and we plan around its rules.
When you are already gone
Orders do not wait for a truck. If you have left before pickup, or will not have arrived by delivery, any adult you name can stand in: a spouse, a friend, a neighbor, someone from your unit. They need the key and your permission. Carriers do not normally require a power of attorney for this.
When the dates move
They often do. Book when you have orders in hand, give us the report date, and tell us the moment anything changes. A pickup window of several days gives us room to adjust without starting over.
A short plan for a PCS
- Ask your transportation office what your orders cover.
- Decide which vehicles you will drive and which you will ship.
- Get a price and book once you have orders in hand.
- Name a second adult on the order in case your dates move.
- Empty the vehicle, photograph it, and keep the paperwork with your move file.

Common questions
Can my spouse handle the whole shipment?
Yes. Your spouse can book, release the vehicle, and receive it. Put their name and number on the order.
Do you ship vehicles overseas?
No. We arrange transport within the United States. For an overseas tour, we can move a vehicle to family or to storage stateside.
Can you deliver to base housing?
Sometimes, if a pass is arranged ahead of time. Meeting at the gate or the visitor center is faster and is what most families choose.
Will I get paperwork for a reimbursement claim?
Keep your quote and your final receipt. Those are the two documents finance offices usually ask for.
